Abstract
1280041 Electric couplings SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd Y SUGIMOTO and S NAKATA 28 July 1969 37735/69 Heading H2E In a device for joining electric cables 1, each of which comprises a conducting core 3, insulation 2, and an external sheath 16, there is provided a conducting member 5 having a plurality of terminals 4 and being fitted with a moulded, insulating cover 6 which is tapered at parts 6a to fit corresponding portions 8c of elastic sleeves 8 which are arranged over the sheaths 16 of the cables 1. Each sleeve 8, which may be of synthetic rubber, comprises an inner insulating portion 8d and an outer semiconductive portion 8e which is moulded into a conical portion 8a forming a stress-cone. In use, a sleeve 8 is slid over a cable sheath 16 which is then cut back to expose cable shielding layer 12. The gap between cable insulation 2 and the sleeve 8 is filled by a spacer 9, a range of spacers being provided to permit one size of sleeve 8 to be used with cables of different diameters. Each spacer 9 is made of rubbers similar to those of the sleeve 8 and comprises a stress-cone 9a which is joined to the cable shielding layer 12 by a wrapping of conducting tape 10. Three phase connectors may be held side by side by a bolt (13, Fig. 6, not shown) through the casings 7. Waterproofing is ensured by clamps 11a, b, c around the sleeve 8. The arrangement may be used for linear, branch or other joints and unused terminals 4 may be covered with an insulating cap (14, Fig. 5, not shown).
