In making a tap joint in a multicore cable having an outer conductor 2 consisting of wires or tapes, and outer insulation 3, continuity of the conductor 2 is preserved during jointing by first applying to a bared length of the conductor a pair of spaced split bonding saddles which are interconnected by a cable 8. Some of the wires or tapes between the saddles are then cut and bent back over their adjacent saddles, to which they are clamped by worm drive clips 10, after which some or all the remaining wires or tapes are cut, bent back and clamped to the saddles by clips 7 these clips also securing the free ends of the previously cut wires or tapes. The outer conductor 14 of a tapping cable 12 is then bared and, after insertion of the cable through a socket on one of the bonding saddles, is bent back over the outside of the socket and clamped by a clip 15. The bared core 13 of cable 12 is thereafter connected to one of the main cable cores by a connector 19, 20. An insulating housing consisting of end plates 23 and a cylindrical wall 24 is then placed round the joint and filled with insulating compound. Mechanical protection for the housing is provided by a metal cover 30 of inverted channel-section to which the conductor 8 is bonded by a clamping plate 31. The saddles, the connector 19, 20 and the insulating housing may be of the kind described in Specifications 875,522, 875,523 and 875,524 respectively.
