Abstract

1277217 Cable joints SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd Y SUGIMOTO S NAKATA and A NAKASHIMA 24 July 1969 37331/69 Heading H2E A joint in cables having conductive cores, core insulation 3, and conductive sheaths C comprises an insulating sleeve 2, which is larger than the, overall cable diameter, and spacers 4 each of which is arranged between core insulation 3 and a corresponding end of the sleeve 2 and incorporates a stress-relief core 5. The sleeve 2 may thus be slid aside over one cable during jointing, so that cutting back of the cable is minimized, and the spacers 4 are made in a range of sizes to allow one size of sleeve 2 to be used with various cable sizes. The sleeve 2 is prefabricated from. synthetic rubbers and comprises an insulating portion 2b and inner and outer semi-conductive portions 2a, 2c respectively. A stress-relief cone may be incorporated at one or both ends of the sleeve 2. The spacers 4 are also moulded from synthetic rubber and each spacer is located by an internal flange thereon which fits between the cable core joint 1 and the end of the insulation 3. The cones 5 reduce the electric stress at the ends of cable shielding tapes T. The arrangement may be used for a cable branch joint or for a termination in direct connection with an appliance.
