Abstract
715,649. Two-part couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. March 9, 1953, [March 10, 1952.] No. 6197/52. Class 38(1). [Also in Group V] A connector is formed on the end of a multicore cable by first stripping back the outer sheath 11 and clamping an outer screen 10 between metal rings 12, 13 located on the cable, after which insulating sleeves 21 are slipped over the exposed cores, the ends of which have been bared of insulation, and the cable end is placed in a mould (see Group V) into which is forced molten thermoplastic insulating material to form an inner body 36. A screening member 38 for certain of the inner cores is then located in a recess 39 formed in the end face of body 36, a wire 46 connected thereto being threaded through a passage 47 moulded in the body which wire is connected to a further wire 28, Fig. 6, attached to screens on said certain inner cores and also to the ring I3, this attachment being performed prior to the moulding of body 36. Pins 49 are now attached to the core ends and the cable end placed in a further mould for the formation of an outer insulating body 56 which surrounds body 36 and holds in place the pins and screen 38 as well as extending over the rings I2, I3. A metal sleeve 66 with an internally screw-threaded coupling ring 64 at one end is slid over the outer body and held in place by screws 67 entering tapped holes in ring I2. Recesses 7I in ring 64 receive locating projections on the co-operating connector which has captive thereon a rotatable coupling ring for engaging ring 64. A rubber sleeve 69 surrounds the sleeve 67.
