Abstract

535,457. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MADDOCK, A. J. Feb. 20, 1940, No. 3188. [Class 36] The concentric conductors 1, 2 of an air-spaced cable are spaced by insulators 3 comprising a pair of hollow conical frusta 3 either manufactured in one piece or subsequently attached at their ends of equal diameter. In a modification, the two parts are transposed so that the junction point is against the outer conductor (Fig 3, not shown). The arrangement is such that no radial line extending between the conductors lies wholly within the insulator. Suitable materials for a radiofrequency cable are porcelain, steatite or other ceramics, synthetic moulded compounds, or glass. The conical surfaces may have annular ribs to increase the leakage-path, and parts may be cut away to reduce the amount of solid di-electric. The necessary number of insulators are slid over conductor 2 which is then slid into conductor 1.
