Abstract

830,675. Injection moulding electric couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. July 14, 1958 [July 15, 1957], No. 22422/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] A coupling body 1 of thermoplastic material is moulded on to the end of a coaxial cable 2 in two stages whereby the tendency for the cable to distort due to the hot thermoplastic material melting the cable insulation is reduced. After connection of the centre and outer cable. conductors 3, 4 to the inner and outer contacts 7, 8, the outer conductor being clamped between sleeves 11, 12, a two-part mould, one part 21 of which is shown, is applied to the outer contact 8 and the cable end, and hot thermoplastic material is injected through a passage 22 to form an outer body part 9, further passages 24, 26 in the mould which communicate with ports 16, 17 in contact 8 being plugged during this operation. After cooling of the body part 9 these plugs are removed and a closure member 31 placed over the outer end of contact 8. Further thermoplastic material, which may have better electrical properties than that of the body part 9 is then injected through passages 24, 26 into the space between the inner and outer contacts to form an inner body part 10 which bonds to the cable insulation 5 and the contacts 7, 8. After cooling of this inner body, the two-part mould and closure 32 are removed.
