Abstract
1,119,231. Cable jointing; sleeve couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Jan., 1966 [1 Feb., 1965], No. 4294/65. Heading H2E. A stress cone structure of insulating material used in joining the ends of two gas-insulated cables is apertured to allow free flow of the gas. It may comprise three frusto-conical parts 24, 26, 28 welded together, the part 28 having an axial sleeve 16 at its tapered end and apertures 30 in its surface, or it may be moulded in one piece, Fig. 4 (not shown). In joining two such cables, a stress cone is mounted on each of the partially stripped cores of the cable ends, a cylindrical insulating tube 12 placed around one cable end, and the cores then joined using a conductive sleeve 18. The joint may be covered with semi-conductive and insulating layers 20, 22 and is then surrounded by the tube 12 which is positioned between the two stress cones, the tapered ends of the cones fitting tightly around the ends of tubes 5 which define gas conduit ducts within the cables. An outer semi-conductive layer 7 of the cable is then extended to cover both the cones and the cylinder 12, and the joint further surrounded by a metal shell 42, bonded or clamped to corrugated portions 10 of the cable sheaths. In a modification (dotted lines) the tube 12 is supported by an additional double-ended cone structure 36.
