Abstract

1311067 Cables BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 8 Nov 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 38242/70 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] A distribution cable has a neutral conductor 4 and insulated power conductors 2 helically laid up in a rubber or plastics sheath 6 and possibly an outer sheath, e.g. of helically lapped metal tape electrically connected to the neutral conductor, and a number of branch cables comprising one or more insulated power conductors 7 and a (preferably outer concentric) neutral conductor connected to it at spaced intervals before installation. Each branch cable may have one half of a two part coupling attached to it. The branch cable is prepared and a piece of the sheath 6, if present, is cut away and a metal band of approximately dumb-bell shape 12 is fitted as shown, e.g. by welding it to the neutral conductor 9 of the branch cable and the neutral conductor 4 of the distribution cable, or the outer sheath if present. The or each power conductor of each branch cable is connected to a power conductor of the distribution cable, first removing the insulation and the outer sheath (if present) about the point of attachment. The area around the joint is then insulated by injecting or pouring an insulating compound into a mould fitted around the distribution and branch cables. If the distribution cable has not been sheathed before the branch cables are attached they may be laid along side it over substantially their whole length, and a single contrusion carried out.
