Abstract

619,424. Cables. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd., SMITH, E. W., and PRESSWELL, R. W. Dec. 9, 1946, No. 36378. [Class 36] A repeater housing for submarine cables comprises a metallic sheath built up of a series of annular elements 1 which nest one within the other and are capable of limited angular displacement. The housing is encased in armouring wires W overlying a layer F of water-resistant material and is provided with entry glands G, which may be packed with insulating material M around the conductor C, and which are connected to the end elements of the housing by spigoted bushes 13. Reinforcing wires 15 may be applied over the annular elements 1 and anchored at each end in a groove in the end elements by a clamp 16; a lead or copper sheath 17 may be extruded over the reinforcing wires. The water-resistant layer F may be of polythene which has been mixed with powder material to render it conductive for the repeater earthing wires. Specification 608,042 is referred to.
