Abstract

623,730. Gas-filled cables. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd., DEAN, J. N., and SMITH, E. W. Feb. 25, 1946, No. 5853. [Class 36] A submarine electric communication cable comprises a bare inner conductor 1, spacing means 3 consisting of an open helix of dielectric material applied directly to the inner conductor, an envelope 4 of dielectric material applied over the spacing means, with a gas under pressure contained within the envelope 4, and a tubular metallic membrane 6, which is impermeable to gas, directly beneath or enclosing the envelope 4. The conductor 1 may consist of copper tape applied longitudinally to a core 2 of dielectric material such as polythene. The membrane 6 may be used as the return conductor, or, if placed beneath the insulating envelope 4 a separate outer conductor may be used. Bedding 8, armouring 9 and a serving 10 complete the cable.
