Abstract
627,103. Air-space cables. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd., DEAN, J. N., and SMITH, E. W. March 20, 1947, No. 7744. [Class 36] An air space coaxial cable, in which the air space is surrounded by a sheath of dielectric material, has positioned within the inner conductor a material having moisture-absorbing properties superior to those of the dielectric material, so as to delay any increase of humidity within the air space and consequent deterioration, of the electrical characteristics. In the case of a cable having a central conductor, as described in Specification 623,748, the absorbent material may form the central core, may be wrapped around the central core, or may be applied as a backing to the metallic tapes forming the inner conductor. Paper is a suitable material to use for the purpose. Additional protection may be given by providing the cable with a water excluding layer, such as metallic tapes applied helically over the outer sheath of the cable, and secured with an adhesive such as bitumen. An additional absorbent layer may be applied between different layers of the outer sheath of the cable.
