Abstract
1394831 Joining cables BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 2 Aug 1972 [18 May 1971] 15595/71 Heading H2E A branch cable is joined to a reverse-lay distribution cable by stripping off a length of the protective cover of the distribution cable to define a joint region connecting the earth/ neutral of the branch cable to the concentric conductor of the distribution cable in a first rone of the joint region, dividing the wires of the concentric conductor into bunches and insulating the bunches at a second zone in the joint region, making the phase connections in the second zone and insulating and enclosing the completed joint. Preferably the first and second zones are at opposite ends of the joint region. The insulation on the concentric conductor bunches may be removed after the phase connections have been made and insulated and before the insulating and enclosing step. An external earth electrode may also be connected to the concentric conductor. A connector, Fig. 5, for connecting to the concentric conductor comprises a cylinder split into halves 9, 10 and slipped under the concentric conductor to which it is clamped by a worm-and-screw strap. To half 9 are brazed terminals 11 for receiving the earth/neutral conductors of the branch cables and the external earth electrode.
