Abstract

1387819 Cable joints BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 5 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 18835/71 Heading H2E The wires 5 forming an outer concentric earth or neutral conductor of a main cable 6 are pulled away from the phase cores 1, 2, 3 and arranged in a curved layer 10 at the top of a joint with a branch cable 8. The layer 10 is secured by clamps. The cable 6 is of the "wave wire" kind in which the lag of the wires 5 reverses at intervals. Each clamp comprises two curved jaws 11, 12 held together by screws 13. The branch cable outer conductor 15 is either held between the jaws 11, 12 in a passage 14 or clamped by a screw 17 in a bore 16. A connector 9 connects the phase conductors 2 and 7. The joint is enclosed in a box (not shown) which is filled with potting material, the layer 10 providing an earthed screen across the top of the joint. The arrangement is stated to make efficient use of the joint volume.
