Abstract
916,521. Insulating cable joints. PIRELLI S.p.A. Nov. 23, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 39621/59. Class 38 (1). A method of jointing a cable insulated with thermoplastic material comprises winding around the junction of the conductors a non- adhesive tape 7 whose characteristics are similar to those of the thermoplastic insulation of the conductors. Further tape 8, which may be of partially conducting cloth or a partially conducting material whose characteristics remain unaltered at the melting temperature of the thermoplastic tape 7, is then wound on the tape 7. The jointing zone is next heated, e.g. in a paraffin wax bath or in an oven, at a temperature higher than the softening temperature of the tape 7, and the taping 8 acts as a substantially non-deformable mould for the material of the tape 7. Subsequently, and after slow cooling, the taping 8 is removed or left in position and, after securing a screen 9 to the existing screen 3, an outer sheath 12 is applied in a manner similar to that used for the insulation immediately surrounding the joined conductors. Finally, a second winding of inextensible tape is applied and the whole is heated at a temperature higher than the softening temperature of the material constituting the sheath 12. After slow cooling, the second winding of inextensible taping may be wholly removed or left in position. Examples are given of the jointing of cables having P.V.C. and polythene insulation.
