Abstract

721,662. Electric cables; cable joints. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Nov. 29, 1950 [July 5, 1948], No. 18074/48. Classes 36 and 38 (1). Electric conductors are prevented from creeping within the sheath of an electric cable 10 by removing part of the sheath to expose the core 11, enclosing adjacent portions of the sheath 10a and exposed core 11 within a hot plastic mass of polyethylene 12, and allowing the mass to cool and shrink to form a muff on the enclosed parts. A plug of polyethylene may be inserted between the insulated conductors to form an enlargement of the core and improve the grip of the muff thereon. This plug also becomes fused with the muff. When a cable joint 14, Fig. 5, is made the enclosing lead sleeve is applied in two parts. Part 16 is plumbed to the cable sheath and filled with a hot plastic mass 17 of polyethylene. The other part 15 is plumbed to the lead sheath at 15a on the other side of the joint, and the two parts are plumbed together at 15c. Instead of polyethylene another thermoplastic organic insulating material having similar physical properties may be used. Specification 721,664, [Group V], is referred to.
