Abstract

1,022,390. Insulating cable joints. BURNDY CORPORATION. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 30, 1963], No. 43297/64. Heading H2E. The bared conductors 20 and 22 of two mineral insulated cables are joined in a known fashion, e.g. by means of splicing sleeves 24, 25, and then a tubular powder case 26 having a longitudinal slot 28, is placed over the ends of the cables and a powdered insulating material 30 is poured into the slot 28 until the case is filled. A seamless sleeve 10 is drawn over the powder case to close the slot 28 and is indented near its ends to form a sealed connection. The powder case is made of springy material, e.g. beryllium copper, and the slot 28 is expandable to accommodate different cable sizes. An upset tag 32 is formed adjacent each end of the powder case to abut and position the opposed ends of the cables. An adaptor 40, Fig. 4 (not shown), may be used to connect cables of different sizes. This fits over the smaller diameter cable and increases its outer diameter to that of the other cable. In a modified powder case, Fig. 6 (not shown), which may be used with the adaptor 40, the longitudinal slot extends right to one end only, which end fits over the shoulder of the adaptor.
