Abstract
1,249,882. Electric couplings. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 24 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967], No. 50516/68. Heading H2E. A coupling device for connecting an underwater cable, e.g. a coaxial cable of the type having an axial strength member 21, to a repeater housing, includes a hollow conical termination member 41 of e.g. beryllium copper, into which the strength member 21 may be secured and from a flanged face 42 of which, a lead 46 to the repeater may be connected, an anchor 43 of dielectric material e.g. ceramics engaging the outer surface of the member 41 and a dielectric load-bearing body 48 of e.g. polyethylene enclosing the termination member and the anchor, and forming a continuous dielectric connection between the cable dielectric 23 and the repeater dielectric when the coupling is in use. The device is supported in a housing 11 by a gimbal mounting. One end of a rubber bellows 30 being attached to the gimbal housing 11 and the other end to a boot frame 28. Electrical continuity between the outer conductor 24 of cable 20 and outer conductor 54 of the repeater connection pigtail is effected through cone housing 16, cap 15, and pigtail cap 53. Inner electrical continuity is achieved by means of a cone extension tube 41 which envelopes the inner conductor 22, the cone being connected to the repeater via a tube 46. Dielectric continuity is afforded from cable dielectric 23 to tail end (49) of moulding 48 (Fig. 2, not shown) and between end (50) of moulding 48 and the dielectric 52 of the repeater connection pigtail by hot moulding processes.
