Abstract

1,142,794. Coaxial connectors and connections. AMP Inc. 27 June, 1966 [8 July, 1965], No. 28680/66. Heading H2E. The outer conductors of a pair of screened or coaxial cables are electrically connected by a thin conducting film bonded to the surface of a plastics connector body. In one embodiment, in which the connection is disconnectible, the socket part of the connector comprises a metal plated plastics sleeve 22 whose rear end is pushed under the outer conductor 16 of a cable 10 and secured by a surrounding crimping ferrule 28. An insulating insert 24 located in the sleeve 22 houses a springy contact socket 26 whose rear end engages the inner conductor 12 of the cable 10. The plug part of the connector comprises a metal-plated plastic sleeve 32, connected by a surrounding crimping ferrule 36 to the outer conductor 16<SP>1</SP> of a cable 10<SP>1</SP>, the bared end 12<SP>1</SP> of the inner conductor forming the plug contact. The sleeve 32 carries a screw-ring 34 for engaging the sleeve 22. Preferably each conducting film (Fig. 3, not shown) comprises four layers, of electro-less copper, and electroplated copper, nickel and silver, respectively. In another embodiment (Figs. 7-10, not shown) the outer conductors of cables are joined by a metal plated plastics sleeve (50) whose end portions (50b) are each connected by a surrounding crimping ferrule to one of the outer conductors, the inner conductors of the cables being connected by a metal tube (52). In either embodiment the plastics connector body may be metal plated on either its internal or its external surface, or both.
