Abstract

1,006,696. Two-part couplings. CANNON ELECTRIC CO. July 30, 1962 [July 31, 1961], No. 29248/62. Heading H2E. The pins of a plug body are recessed within bores of larger diameter extending from the front surface of the body to receive the projecting tubular portions of mating socket contacts. Fig. 3 shows plug-and-socket members 14, 12 comprising respectively one-piece insulating bodies 40, 16 with integral mounting flanges 50, 26 and forward interengaging portions 46, 22 of trapezoidal crosssection for the purpose of polarization. The end cups 54 and 34 of pin-and-socket contacts 60, 36 are moulded into body bores. 54, 30 respectively, and hold conductors 64, 38 which are soldered or crimped therein. Bevelled edges are provided on the forward parts of skirt 22, bores 54, sockets 36 and pins 60 to gude these engaging parts into alignment. The pins 36 may be formed from a plurality of springy wires, Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown). Fig. 5 shows a rack-and-panel connector in which the plug-and-socket bodies 76 and 74 have a shell and contact block type of construction. The composite socket body 74 is fastened together by a rear clamp 90 and includes two elastomer parts, a rear grommet 88 and a seal member 82. A pad may be mounted in the socket body 74 against the front surface of insulator 82 to provide an interface moisture seal between the latter and the adjacent surface of plug insulator 118. Fig. 9 shows an application in which a pin contact 174 is mounted on a printed circuitboard 176 and shrouded by an insulation body 184 attached to the surface 186 of the board. The flared bore 188 receives a socket 192 which projects from a connector 194. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which a plug body 156 with recessed pins as above acts as a holder for a transistor 150 or the like which has exposed socket contacts 152 with a glass seal layer 154 about their bases.
