Abstract

721,665. Cable and sleeves; cable joints. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Nov. 29, 1950 [Aug. 11, 1948], No. 21148/48. Classes 36 and 38 (1). A fluid-tight seal is provided in a sheathed cable by separating the conductors 3 where they protrude from the end of the sheath 1, removing a portion of insulation from each conductor near the end of the sheath, arranging a cupshaped mould 5 around the sheath end and protruding conductors, filling the mould with molten polyethylene so that it embeds the end of the sheath and exposed portions of the spaced conductors and cooling the polyethylene so that it shrinks and sets on to the embedded surfaces. Insulating sleeves 4 may be placed over the exposed portions of the conductors, the sleeves being perforated to permit the molten polyethylene to flow within the sleeves. Instead of polyethylene another thermoplastic organic insulating material having similar physical properties may be used. The joint between electrically connected cable lengths may be sealed similarly, and the seal enclosed within a sleeve or casing.
