Abstract
596,583. Cable joints. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 22, 1944, No. 23258. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1943. [Class 38 (i)] A Y-joint for cables A, B, each consisting of conducting cores surrounded by insulation and a metal' sheath such as copper braiding with a further copper braiding surrounding both cores and an outer insulating cover 24, is formed by first removing in steps the insulation and braiding from the parts of the cables to be connected as shown at 14, 18, and soldering or otherwise connecting the bared conductors 10, 30. The joints are then covered with insulating material 46 which may be thermoplastic and moulded on to the cable insulation 14. A stiffening member 50 which may be of metal is inserted between the two sets of cables and may be held in place by wire bindings 52 engaging notches 56. The member 50 serves as a conductor to interconnect the metal sheaths of the cables. A copper shield is now placed to cover the entire joint, the shield consisting of two parts 60, 62 soldered together along their opposing edges 64 as shown in Fig. 3. A final covering of insulation is provided either in the form of tape wound over the full length of the shield and passing between the cables B or comprising two insulating members of the same shape as the members 60, 62 and made of the same material as the outer insulation of the cables. These members or the tape are heated and moulded to unite them to the cable insulation. In a modification, in which the conductor 10 is to be connected to the ends of two separate conductors 30, the latter are laid against the conductor 10 and soldered thereto, the joint being covered with a short copper sleeve. The joint is completed as described above.
