Abstract
958,644. Cable and wire couplings. AMP Inc. April 30, 1963 [May 9, 1962], No. 16940/63. Heading H2E. An electrical connector (Fig. 3) for permanent connection to the braided metal sheath 6 of a cable 7, comprises an inner metal ferrule 3 which is crimped about the sheath 6 by applying pressure to an outer metal ferrule 1, the material of the inner ferrule being extrudable and entering the interstices of the sheath, and the outer ferrule being of a material which when shaped under crimping pressure maintains the inner ferrule in its extruded shape subsequent to crimping. The connector may be adapted to receive a pig-tail earthing lead 9 (Fig. 8) in which case the outer ferrule 1 has a bight 2 and can thus receive both the inner ferrule 3 and the bared core 81. When crimping is effected, the outer ferrule 1, which may be of tin-plated copper, is deformed to a roughly circular cross-section (Fig. 4) and clamps the core 8<SP>1</SP> causing the inner ferrule (which may comprise 95% tin, 5% antimony), to extrude into the interstices 11 of sheath 6 (Fig. 7, not shown). If a flat conductor is to be crimped between ferrules 1 and 3, ferrule 1 is of circular cross-section initially. Ferrule 1 may have connection tabs, and may be surrounded by an insulating sleeve. The internal diameter of ferrule 3 may be greater than the external diameter of sheath 7, to allow the connector to be slid along and crimped to any desired bared portion of the braid. A connector for a twocore cable has ferrules of generally oval crosssection (Fig. 8, not shown). U.S.A. Specification 3,010,184 is referred to.
