Abstract
1,102,837. Enclosing cable joints. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. 15 Nov., 1966 [13 Jan., 1966], No. 1624/66. Heading H2E. A cable joint is enclosed by wrapping tape round the sheath to form end members 4, 5 spaced axially apart on each cable, sliding a plastics material sleeve 6 over the inner two end members 4 and filling the space between end members 4, 5 with a plug 8 made of resin impregnated tape. Sleeve 6 is sealed to end members 4 by adhesive tape 7, the seal being covered by plug 8, which itself has a covering 9 which may be made of aluminium foil and P.V.C. tape. For use with fluid-filled cables, a valve may be fitted to sleeve 6 or alternatively may be attached to a pipe fixed to the cable and passing through the end members. In a modification, the end members 4 may be placed wholly on the bare conductor or partly on the conductor and the sheath.
