Abstract

1292608 Applying resilient sleeves; protecting pipe joints MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 5 Dec 1969 [6 Dec 1968] 59590/69 Headings F2G and F2S [Also in Division H2] An elastic sleeve 18 is applied to a member 11 by first expanding the sleeve 18 on to a hollow substantially rigid core member 15 consisting of a continuous strip of flexible material in the form of a closed helix with adjacent coils interconnected, placing the assembly of the core member 15 and the sleeve 18 over the member 11, and then removing the core member 15. The core member 15 is a helically grooved tube and is removed as a strip by pulling an end 17 through the core member, adjacent coils becoming separated along the groove 16. The sleeve 18 may be a protective sleeve for a welded pipe joint, an insulating sleeve for electric cables 12 where the insulation 11 has been cut away to splice two cables together, or an end cap for a cable termination, in which case both the sleeve and the core member are conical. The core member 15 is made of cellulose acetate butyrate or P.V.C., and the helical groove extends threequarters of the way through the tube wall. The elastic sleeve 18 is made of vulcanized rubber and may be coated on the inside with a silicone or a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
