Abstract
1,086,145. Enclosing cable joints. W. T. GLOVER & CO. Ltd. Feb. 10, 1966 [Feb. 11, 1965], No. 6037/65. Heading H2E. In a joint for metal-sheathed gas-filled cables a metal sleeve is plumbed to the cable sheath ends, 2, and the plumbed joints surrounded by a structure formed of layers of resin-bonded glass fibre tape, wire binders 9 soldered to the sheaths, or corrugations or roughened portions of the surfaces of the sheaths ensuring a firm grip for the structure. A layer of self-amalgamating polyethylene tape to may be interposed between the plumbed joints and the glass fibre tape. The metal sleeve may be a one-piece lead sleeve 6 completely surrounded by a second layer 11 of resin-bonded glass fibre tape, or may comprise two copper end parts (16) (Fig. 2, not shown) each sealed at one end to a lead strip (19) soldered to the cable sheaths and bolted at its other end to an intermediate steel tube (13). In the latter case the glass fibre is extended to cover the end parts, a firm grip being ensured by copper strips (21) soldered to the sheaths. In both cases the glass fibre is covered by a protective covering of P.V.C. and polythene tapes, and the complete joint may be surrounded by bitumen-filled resin-bonded fibre glass box.
