Abstract

1,111,378. Welding by pressure. BRJANSKY' MASHINOSTROITELNY ZAVOD. 28 Oct., 1966, No. 48441/66. Heading B3R. In resistance welding the spaced edges of metal parts, metal powder is introduced into the gap between the edges and the powder and the edges are welded between roller electrodes. The powder may be of the same metal as the part to be welded or may contain an alloying addition. The surface of sheets to be welded are cleaned by a metal brush or by grinding and if of low carbon steel are tack welded together. The edges of the sheets are placed between the roller electrodes of a machine and iron powder is supplied under the upper roller from a bin and beneath the lower roller by a trough filled with powder. The powder is pressed by the rollers into the gap between the edges while current is supplied to the rollers to fuse the edges and the powder. Powder may be supplied to only one side of the joint when the roller on the opposite side is of smaller diameter. The sheets may be of non-ferrous metals and may be of different metals.
