Abstract
1,159,389. Welding by pressure. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 5 Aug., 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 35273/66. Heading B3R. In stud-welding using an annular slag forming body between the end of the stud and the workpiece the body is covered with a fine granular slag-forming material piled about the body. A stud 3 is located in a slag-forming body 4 having a collar 5 and notches (not shown) in its lower end and fine granular slagforming material 6 is heaped to cover the body 4. An alternating or direct current source 7 is connected to the work 1 and the welder 10 with a current detector 8 and a time control device 9. An arc is struck between the stud and work and when a predetermined time has elapsed as determined by the device 9 the welder forces the stud into the work. The operation may alternatively be controlled by voltage drop detection or no control other than exerted by the body 4 may be applied. The body 4 may or may not be provided with notches, recesses or through apertures. The granular material shields the molten metal and prevents notching of tho weld metal.
