Abstract
1,013,401. Welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 22, 1962 [Feb. 22, 1961], No. 6422/61. Heading B3R. A steel workpieee 1 is clad by applying a lamina 3 to the workpiece and fusing the lamina 3 and one or more consumable electrodes 2 of similar composition to the lamina 3 by a welding process in which the fused metal is protected from the atmosphere. A stainless steel, chromium steel or non-ferrous nickel alloy cladding may be so applied to a mild steel base. The electrodes 2 may be of a steel containing 17À25% chromium and 9À74% nickel and the lamina 3 of a steel containing 17À8% chromium and 9À9% nickel to reduce the dilution effect. The lamina 3 is secured to the workpiece 1 by spot welds 4 made by carbon dioxide shielded consumable electrode arc welding. The fusing of the cladding is effected by submerged arc welding using electrodes 2 fed in accordance with the arc voltage by rollers 13, 14 and supplied with direct current by a contact block 16 against which they are pressed by jaws 17 on leaf springs 18. The electrodes are oscillated transversely to the direction of welding, either linearly or arcuately about an axis parallel to the workpiece 1.
