Abstract
949,850. Making toothed members. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 16, 1960 [Nov. 25, 1959], No. 39351/60. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F2] A toothed torque-transmitting member such as a gear or a toothed coupling member, comprises a body2 of readily weldable ductile metal to which is applied by fusion welding an overlay 3, 4 of high strength wear resistant metal into which the teeth 5, 6 are formed. A cylinder 2 is rolled from low carbon steel plate and the ends joined by butt welding. Overlays 3, 4 of medium carbon steel are then applied by a D.C. straight polarity submerged arc welding process using two filler wires of higher carbon steel than the finished overlay to allow for loss of carbon during the fusion. The cylinder 2 is preferably pre-heated to 150‹ C. and is rotated during the weld application which proceeds in a helical path with minimum penetration into the cylinder metal. Alternatively, the weld may be applied in longitudinal runs using a reciprocating welding head. An inert gas shielded process may be used. Opposed helical teeth 5, 6 are then machined and subsequently heat treated. Other embodiments are described of coupling members with internal or external teeth, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). An example is given of the welding voltage, current and speed.
