Abstract
751,558. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. July 6, 1954 [Aug. 18, 1953], No. 19819/54. Class 83 (4). In a process of stitch welding, a welding head 10 is moved constantly relative to the workpiece 20, a consumable electrode 12 is fed constantly towards the workpiece 20 and the arc is fed with a current sufficient to melt the electrode at at least twice the rate at which it is fed, so that the arc is extinguished and reestablished by contact between the electrode 12 and the work 20 to produce a series of spaced welds 18. The arc is submerged in flux F or is shielded by a gas, e.g. argon, helium or a mixture of argon and oxygen. The process may be used for forming butt or lapped joints, or for producing plug welds joining superimposed sheets. An iron electrode containing 0.15 per cent carbon, 1.0-1.2 per cent manganese and 0.2-0.3 per cent silicon may be used.
