Abstract

772,387. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. July 5, 1955 [Aug. 10, 1954], No. 19429/55. Class 83 (4). In gas-shielded or submerged arc welding with a consumable electrode, the electrode is a metal strip having a width to thickness ratio of at least 16 to 1 and preferably 32 to 1. The electrode may be of flat, arcuate, V or U- shaped section and of copper or an alloy thereof, mild steel or stainless steel containing 18 per cent Cr, 8 per cent Ni. If a shielding gas is used it may be argon and/or helium. For surfacing, e.g. copper on mild steel, the long side of the electrode is positioned across the feed path. For butt welding the electrode may be positioned along or across the weld, and in the case of circular welds on cylindrical workpieces may be held perpendicularly or tangentially of the workpiece. A submerged arc head 28 for surfacing, shown in Fig. 2, is carried by a self-propelled carriage and has serrated feed rollers 18 which may be profiled to bend the electrode strip to the required section. Spaced parallel runs 40 are made using direct current straight polarity and the intervening spaces are filled using direct current at reverse polarity.
