Abstract

762,170. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1954 [Jan. 26, 1954], No. 36959/54. Class 83 (4). In inert gas shielded or flux-submerged arc welding or surfacing a fusible electrode is fed at at least 50 feet/minute and is inclined rearwardly at 40 to 50 degrees to the workpiece, the welding current exceeds 300,000 amps/square inch of electrode cross-section, and the welding voltage-is greater than 50 volts. An electrode 16 fed by rolls 28 is submerged in flux 10 supplied by a hopper 14. Current is supplied through a beryllium-copper contact nozzle 22 to the electrode at up to 3 inches from the arc so that resistance heating increases the rate of fusion. Welding speeds up to 1000 inches/minute can be attained.
