763,052. Welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1953 [Feb. 14, 1952], No. 4148/53. Class 83 (4). In the method of gas shielded arc welding claimed in Claim 4 of Specification 736,241 including feeding a low carbon steel electrode under automatic control responsive to arc length fluctuation and using a current density of at least 100,000 amps/square inch the shielding gas is instead a mixture of an inert monatonic gas preferably argon with oxygen, the latter forming 1-20 per cent of the mixture. The oxygen percentage is preferably 3-10. An electric motor 10 controlled by means 12 sensitive to the arc voltage or current dependent on arc length drives rollers 11 to feed a wire 15 through a guide 16 within a manifold 17. Argon or helium from containers 26 or 26<SP>1</SP> and oxygen from container 32 are fed to a mixing chamber 21 and thence into the manifold wherein a screen diffuser 23 breaks up the stream into a non-turbulent envelope. The argon or helium and oxygen need not be premixed but may be fed separately to the manifold. The oxygen is dried before mixing in a chamber 35.
