Abstract
495,299. Uniting by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 10, 1938, No. 13956. Convention date, May 11, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] In electric arc welding with bare wire the arc is fed with a protective gas and also with a slag forming paste or powder supplied from an external source during the welding process. The electrode 1 may be fed by rollers through a head 3 to which the current supply is connected. The head is provided with a chamber 7 into which the flux is fed by a crank or motoroperated screw conveyer 6 or by a fan or vanewheel. The head is provided with an annular nozzle 8 fed with gas through a valved conduit 9, the gas issuing from the nozzle and carrying over the flux by injector action. The speed of the motor can be regulated and the screw can be rotated in dependance on the feed rollers. In modifications the gas and flux may be supplied as a mixture to a conduit connected with a nozzle or the gas and flux may be mixed in the interior of a nozzle. Specification 452,670 is referred to.
