Abstract

391,743. Uniting by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Chapman, V. J. ; 25, Lakewood Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 23, 1933, No. 2189. Convention date, Jan. 23, 1932. [Class 83 (iv).] In an arc welding apparatus using a positively fed flux-coated electrode, means are provided for removing a part of the coating which cooperate with means for conducting the current to the electrode at the exposed portions. A coated electrode 8 which is fed by motor-driven wheels 7 in a head traversed along the seam by a motor, passes through a pair of milling cutters 10, saws or grinding wheels for baring the core at intervals, corresponding in position and pitch to the electrode feeding and current conducting projections 23 on the wheels 7. For this purpose the cutters, which are driven by flexible shafts 13 and gears 14 from a motor 12, are mounted in arms 15 pivoted at 16 and drawn inwards periodically by electromagnets 17 against the action of springs 18. The circuit for energizing the magnets is provided with a switch 22 operated by an adjustable cam 29 on a shaft which is geared to one of the feed wheels. The air gaps between the arms 15 and the magnets are' controlled by/threaded cores 20 which are adjusted to regulate the penetration of the cutters into the electrode. Separate means may be provided for feeding the electrode and supplying the current. The flux removing and current conducting means as shown may serve as attachments for a machine normally operating with a bare electrode.
