Abstract
1461223 Welding by fusion PHILLIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 March 1975 [25 March 1974] 11907/75 Heading B3R In a method of plasma-MIG arc welding a plasma is produced in an inert gas flow by an electric arc between a non-consumable electrode 3, Fig. 2, and the workpiece W and a MIG arc is maintained between a consumable electrode 17 and the workpiece, prior to the ignition of the MIG arc the consumable electrode being fed eccentrically with respect to the plasma arc and in a direction parallel to the plasma arc and upon ignition of the MIG arc, the plasma is attracted to the consumable electrode by the MIG arc current to form a substantially concentric sheath around the consumable electrode. The non-consumable electrode may be made of tungsten or of copper or as shown in Fig. 3, a tungsten electrode 3 is mounted in a copper holder 29 which has cooling water connections 31 and 32 and others, not shown. The nozzle housing 21 has a nozzle 11 and is elliptical in cross-section with the non-consumable electrode and the welding wire 17 which passes through a contact tube 15 being disposed in opposite sides of the centre line. An inert gas is supplied through inlets A and a shielding gas is supplied through inlets 27 in a hood 25.
