Abstract
736,241. Welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1953 [Feb. 14, 1952], No. 4147/53. Class 83 (4). In gas-shielded arc welding with a consumable electrode the shielding gas is a stream of a mixture of an inert monatomic gas and 1-20 per cent of the mixture of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide. The percentage of the mixture of the added gas is preferably 3-10 and the electrode may be of carbon steel used at a current density of 100,000 amps. per square inch. An electric motor 10 controlled by means 12 sensitive to the arc voltage or current dependent on arc length drives rollers 11 to feed a wire 15 through a guide 16 within a manifold 17. Argon or helium from containers 26<SP>1</SP>, 26 and the added gas from containers 32 or 321 are fed to a mixing chamber 21 and thence into the manifold wherein a screen diffuser 23 breaks up the stream into a non-turbulent envelope. The added gas is dried before mixing. The gases may not be premixed but may be fed separately to the manifold.
