Abstract

970,266. Welding by fusion. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 9, 1961 [Jan. 19, 1960], No. 1938/60. Heading B3R. In gas shielded arc welding, the electrode is a tubular electrode consisting mainly of carbon and metal powder entrained in an inner stream of gas passing through the electrode constitutes all the added weld metal. The gas shield and the inner stream are of carbon dioxide or a mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen. The shielding gas is fed from containers 2, 3 through one or more dispensers 4 ... 7 containing metal powder and controllable to deliver the desired powder composition with the gas to a junction box 8. The electrode 11 is supplied with current from a tubular cable 9 and is surrounded by a ceramic gas nozzle 12. Powder bearing gas passes through the cable 9 and the electrode 11 and gas passes through the nozzle 12. The arc is supplied with D.C. of either polarity or with A.C. with a superimposed high-frequency stabilizing current.
