Abstract

1,008,687. Cutting and welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 20, 1963 [March 30, 1962], No. 10959/63. Headings B3R and B3V. [Also in Division H5] In the electric arc working of materials, such as cutting, welding or scarping, using a constricted arc torch, the constricted outlet 36 is surrounded by a plurality of annularly disposed gas orifices through which is discharged the same gas as that supplied to the arc. The torch comprises a copper nozzle 22 secured to body B by a brass nut 24 and providing an annular cooling chamber 38. Electrode E comprises a brass tube 12 with a copper plug 14 provided with an arcing tip 20 of zirconium, tungsten, zirconia or thoria; water coolant is supplied to the electrode through pipe 15. The shielding gas may be oxygen, air, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen when used for cutting, or argon or helium when used for welding. It enters through pipe 28 and is delivered tangentially into the annular nozzle chamber 26. From this it is discharged through the constricted outlet 36 and also through the orifices 40 to provide an annular stream of gas surrounding the effluent plasma. Examples are given for the cutting of carbon and stainless steel and aluminium.
