Abstract

[Also in Division H5] An arc plasma torch includes a cup-shaped electrode coaxially disposed at one end of an arc chamber provided with tangential gas inlet ports, the other end of the arc chamber having a coaxial outlet leading into a plasma-confining tube in the form of a nozzle having a ratio of length to inside diameter between 1À2 to 1 and 3 to 1. As shown, a torch T comprises a cupshaped electrode 14 which is separated from a nozzle 16 by an arc chamber 10 electrically insulated from the electrode 14 by an insulator 11. Arc gas from an inlet 13 passes into the chamber 10 through a passage 18 and tangential ports 12, and a cooling fluid for the torch passes from an inlet 20, through passages 22, 24, 28 and 30 to an outlet 32 ; the electrode 14 is cooled by a coolant introduced through an inlet 34. It is stated that the provision of a nozzle of the prescribed dimensions enables the torch to produce a stable, high temperature, high voltage (e.g. exceeding 150 V) arc plasma which may be used for welding, cutting, metal scarfing and metal melting. A water-cooled copper coil may be placed around the electrode 14 to produce a magnetic field. The electrode may be of copper, silver, aluminium, zirconium, molybdenum tungsten or carbon depending upon which gases are used to operate the device.
