Abstract

1,132,580. Electric arc torches. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 2 Dec., 1965 [2 Dec., 1964], No. 51219/65. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B3] In a plasma torch comprising an electrode 1, a nozzle 2, and means S for establishing an arc between the electrode 1 and either a workpiece 13 or the nozzle, a gas stream passes around the electrode into the arc and through the nozzle and a stream of reaction gas is introduced into the nozzle around the first gas under such pressure and in such quantity that the arc and first gas are restricted and the plasma is focused and stabilized. The first stream of N 2 and H 2 is introduced through holes 9 and the second stream of O 2 is introduced through holes 10. Both sets of holes direct the gases at right-angles to the axis of electrode 1 and a further N 2 and H 2 stream 17 is provided to direct the gas downwardly. The holes 9, 10 may direct the gases downwardly and tangentially to the axis when stream 17 is not required.
