Abstract

1346790 Welding by fusion RIKAGAKU KENKYUSHO 29 Dec 1971 [25 Dec 1970 17 Sept 1971] 60549/71 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A plasma generator comprises at least two plasma torches A, B secured to a common plasma nozzle C. The nozzle C has inlets 15, 16 for the plasma torches A, B and a common plasma outlet 17. At least one torch, e.g. torch A is connected to the nozzle C by an insulating spacer 18 so that a stream of gas 20 may be supplied to the annular space defined between the insulator 18, a bushing 3 and the nozzle C. 9 Torch A comprises a rod cathode 1 and at least two concentric bushings 2, 3 whilst torch B comprises a rod cathode 9 and a bushing 11 formed with an arc throttle orifice 10. The negative terminal of a high frequency auxiliary power supply 21 is connected via a switch 22 to the cathode 1 of torch A and the positive terminal is connected to the bushing 2 of the torch A. The negative terminal of the main high frequency power supply 23 is connected to cathode 9 of torch B and the positive terminal is connected to bushing 2 of torch A and to the bushing 11 of torch B via a switch 24. In operation gas streams 7 and 8 are supplied to torch A and auxiliary power supply 21 is connected to torch A by closing switch 22 to establish an auxiliary arc 25. Gas stream 13 is then supplied to torch B, switch 24 is closed to form an arc 26, and a plasma jet is formed which passes from arc throttle orifice 10 to the plasma nozzle C. The two plasma jets thus formed converge at intersection 11 whereupon switches 22, 24 are opened so that a "hairpin" shaped main arc is formed which extends from cathode 9 to bushing 2 and a plasma jet flame 28 is formed which extends from outlet 17 of the plasma nozzle C. A gas stream 20 is supplied to the annular space between torch A and nozzle C to prevent the hairpin arc from engaging the wall of inlet 15. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, torch B is altered in construction so that an active gas, e.g. air or oxygen may be used to form the plasma. Various modifications of the nozzle are disclosed. In Figs. 10 and 1 (not shown) three or four plasma torches supply a common nozzle provided with a single plasma outlet. The generator may work in the transferred arc made with the main arc extending between the work and one torch. Cutting, welding and coating are specified applications.
