Abstract
1350168 Spraying metal COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 2 Aug 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36141/72 Heading C7F [Also in Division H5] In a method of spraying a fusible substance in plasma form, the substance being progressively moved forward into a region where the flames produced by at least two plasma torches converge, the plasma torches are supplied in series by a single current supply such that the anode of one torch is connected to the cathode of the next Fig. 2. Fig. 1 shows a plasma spray gun using the invention having torches comprising anode 7, cathode 8 and insulating sleeve 10. Each torch is mounted by seals 12 and ceramic bush 13 within a chamber 14 which carries cooling water supplied and withdrawn by ducts 16, 15 located in a cork bung 17. Electrical connections are established through conductive braid (such as 21) connected to the ducts which act as terminals. Ducts (not shown) connect each torch chamber 5 to a supply of ionisable gas. The annular nozzle 6 can be arranged to inject air or inert gas to accelerate the spray particles. The fusible substance may be in the form of a wire, strand, or compressed powder rod.
