Abstract

764,571. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Feb. 15, 1955 [March 24, 1954], No. 4429/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XI] In arc welding, e.g. thin sheets of aluminium or stainless steel, the seam is traversed by two or more closely spaced inert gas, e.g. argon, shielded arc welding torches, the leading torch 10 using a consumable electrode 20 and the following torch 12 or torches using non-consumable, e.g. water-cooled copper or tungsten, electrodes. Where two torches are used each is supplied with direct current of reverse polarity and to prevent deflection of the trailing arc H towards the leading arc S an arc deflector consisting of an electromagnet or permanent magnet 25 with a pair of pole pieces P is positioned behind the trailing arc H. Alternatively, each arc may be surrounded, by a focusing coil. When a third torch is positioned centrally, it is supplied with direct current of straight polarity. The longitudinal seam of tube formed from aluminium strip can be welded in this way.
