Abstract
1,105,939. Welding by fusion or pressure. R. B. BOBBINS. 28 May, 1965, No. 22866/65. Heading B3R. Metallic workpieces having unprepared edges are welded by spacing the edges above a backing member at least partially filling the gap with metallic particles having the same principal metal component as the workpieces and fusing at least a portion of the metallic particles to form a weld. The fusion may be effected by are welding, e.g. submerged arc, inert gas shielded with consumable or tungsten electrode, tandem are with D.C. for the leading are and A.C. for the trailing arc, plasma arc, beam welding, flame welding, and resistance or high frequency welding. The backing member which may be water-cooled may be a flat copper bar or may be shaped to conform to a tubular workpiece or be L-sectioned. Both ends of the backing member are connected to one side of the current supply. The powder which in arc welding forms up to 50% of the weld varies from steel shot of <1>/8 inch diameter to fine powder and may include organic or inorganic ingredients or alloying agents. Aluminium mild steel and alloy steel workpieces are referred to. Welding may be effected in a single pass. Alternatively the gap may be filled with iron powder and a weld formed using a consumable electrode. The workpieces are turned upside down and the weld 6, Fig. 2, functions as a root weld. The gap is filled with iron powder 4 and the weld is completed using a consumable electrode. The edges of a large diameter pipe, Fig. 5, are pressed together by vice members 19 after the gap has been filled with iron powder 22 and welding current is passed across the gap between two electrodes 20, 21 contacting the pipe.
