Abstract
900,337. Welding by fusion. ARNOLDY, R. F. Jan. 20, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960; June 27, 1960], No. 2318/61. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group II] An alloy coating is produced on a metal base by depositing a measured quantity of alloying constituents on a predetermined area of the base, creating an arc between an electrode and the alloying constituents, and controlling the rate of melting and traversing of the electrode to produce a coating of the required composition. The base B is divided into strips by marks 18 and powdered alloy is deposited on one of the strips from a measuring trough 12. The powder is flattened using the base 14 of the trough 12 and is covered with granular flux F. A fusible ductile electrode 25 submerged in the flux F but spaced from the powder is traversed at a predetermined rate using a predetermined current electrode feed and electrode extension (say 1“ inches) to produce a weld bead covering the strip. Alternate strips A-1, A-2 are coated and subsequently the intervening strips A-3 are coated in similar manner. Open arc welding or gas shielded arc welding with, say argon or carbon dioxide, may be used. Specified powder constituents are chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, silicon, manganese, carbon, cobalt, tungsten and boron. The electrode may be iron, cobalt, aluminium, copper, silver, nickel or titanium or alloys including one or more of these metals. Examples of alloy coatings produced with iron or steel electrodes on a steel base are:- The base may consist of two workpieces with the coating covering the seam.
