Abstract

1,045,620. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Oct. 15, 1964 [Oct. 15, 1963], No. 42085/64. Heading B3R. In gas-shielded arc-welding ferrous metals using a continuous electrode, the shielding gas contains 0À5-20% by volume of nitrous oxide. Other constituents of the shielding gas may be oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or inert gases, e.g. argon. Drop, spray or dip transfer may be used. Fluxing ingredients, alloying or deoxidizing agents, e.g. ferro-silicon or aluminium, or denitriding agents such as zirconium, titanium or boron may be added to the weld. A suitable gas is carbon dioxide with 0À5-20% nitrous oxide. The amount of nitrous oxide may be at the higher end of the range if denitriding agents are present. The following welding wires may be used: 0À04% C, 1À2% Mn, 0À5% Si, 0À1% Al, 0À1% Ti, 0À07% Zr, balance Fe or 0À08% C, 1À2% Mn, 0À5% Si, 0À02% S, 0À017% P.
