Abstract

837,632. Electric arc furnaces. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., BERRY, R. L. P., BUSBY, A. D., and BADGER, D. V. April 3, 1958 [April 11. 19571. No. 11955/57. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXII] A method of casting titanium &c. consists in striking an arc between a consumable electrode 5 and a watercooled hearth 2 and allowing the molten metal to drop through an aperture 4 in the hearth into a water-cooled ingot mould 11. The hearth 2 is of copper. The arc is moved in a circular path by an electromagnet 10. The ingot is drawn by a bar 17 through a chamber 12 having a vacuum or inert gas connection 14 and an observation window 13. The mould 11 may be a graphite-lined copper mould. A skull of titanium may be formed initially on the hearth.
