Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain desired crude ingots with less evaporation loss without any contamination by melting recycled raw materials of active metals and high-melting- point metals in a vacuum plasma furnace, molding these to bar form and subjecting the bars to consumable electrode-type arc melting.
CONSTITUTION: Recycled materials of active metals such as Ti and Zr and high- melting-point metals such as Ta, Nb, Mo and W or the alloys composed basically of these metals are melted in a vacuum plasma melting furnace provided with a water-cooled copper hearth, by which bar-form consumable electrodes for secondary melting are made. By using these melting rods and performing consumable electrode type arc melting, desired crude ingots are molded. If necessary, component controlling is performed by using additive elements such as Sn, Fe, Cr and Ni in the vacuum plasma melting process.
