Abstract

PURPOSE: To cast a sound ingot of titanium or a titanium base alloy by a method wherein a metallic electrode base material is cleaned by removing a catalyst coating and contaminants therefrom, and is subjected to vacuum plasma melting and vacuum arc melting.
CONSTITUTION: The catalyst coating and contaminants on the surface of scraps of the metallic electrode based on titanium or a titanium base alloy are removed by subjecting the scraps to a high-temperature treatment, a vacuum treatment, ultrasonic cleaning, a blasting treatment, a gas blowing treatment, a pickling treatment, and alkali treatments, an oxidizer treatment, an electrolytic treatment or a physical and chemical treatment consisting of a combination of these treatments. Then, the electrode material is subjected to vacuum plasma melting in a water-cooled copper hearth, in which case the composition of the material may be controlled by adding alloying components if required. By using the melting rod thus obtained, consumable electrode type vacuum arc melting is conducted to obtain a desired ingot. The ingot can be regenerated as the metallic electrode by grinding the surface thereof followed by cutting work or machining.
